Potential Benefits & Drawbacks of Using Pepper Spray for Self Defense

In modern days, you can’t leave your house unequipped with a self defense weapon. It is quite likely that an attacker is waiting for you to victimize you. Hence, to ensure your safety =, you have to carry a weapon. There are several types of weapons you can use for self defense, and one of them is pepper spray. Pepper spray is one of the most commonly used self defense weapons. Women in particular use it as a weapon to deal with the attackers. It works effectively to save you from attackers but it has a share of advantages and drawbacks. Here are those benefits and drawbacks explained!

Benefits of Using Pepper Spray

  • Ease of Carry

The greatest benefit of pepper spray is that it is quite easy to carry. It is generally too small that it fits well into your pocket. You can carry it in your handbag as well. Such a small device or thing causes no harm when carrying. Also, it is quite safe to carry in your pocket or bag.

  • Ease of Use

Another reason why it is a perfect choice is that it is quite easy to use. You need such a weapon for your protection which is quite easy to use. In the case of this spray, all you need to do is push a button at its top or side. When you push that button aiming at the face of the attacker, it is quickly sprayed on its face. So, this is the simple method of using it.

  • Severe Temporary Effect

Though it is a non-lethal self defense weapon that causes no permanent damage, the temporary damage is quite severe. The temporary damage is serious enough to save your life from the attacker.  As you spray it on the face of the attacker, it causes a burning sensation to his eyes. This burning effect may force the closure of his eyes and may lead to temporary blindness.

  • Usable From Some Distance

The perfect advantage of pepper spray is that it can be used from some distance. Most self defense weapons are used only when you are too close to the attacker such as stun guns. However, in the case of pepper spray, you can stay at some distance and push the button to spray it on the face of the attacker. It would still be quite effective.

Drawbacks of Using Pepper Spray

  • Self Harm

Though pepper spray is a safe weapon to carry in your pocket or bag, it is not the safest to use. Self-harm is a possibility with it. If a strong wind is blowing towards you, the spray will come back to your face and will damage your eyes instead, causing even more trouble for you.

  • Non Lethal

One thing that makes me rethink using pepper spray for self defense is the fact that it is a non-lethal weapon. It does not cause permanent damage to the attacker which I want. The attacker is back on his feet when the effect of the spray reduces. So, he may attack you again!

  • Becomes Ineffective At Times

At times, pepper spray becomes an ineffective weapon to use. It loses its effectiveness with the passage of time. This is because the intensity of the chilli spray lessens. Hence, you need to get another one after quite some time. So, this is why people regret using it.

Would You Prefer Using Pepper Spray for Self Defense?

There are many reasons to use pepper spray as a self defense weapon, and many reasons not to. The reason which makes me think is that it is a non-lethal weapon and does not help me teach a lesson to the attackers. However, the aim is to save my life. Therefore, I would still carry this non-lethal weapon to secure myself from the attackers. What about you? Would you prefer using it for self defense? Let me know if you won’t!
