Description Of Pepper Spray's Components And Possible Harms

Image
Pepper spray first came into use in Japan, but was not mass produced until the 1980s. It drew criticism for being a "new toy" that should have been classified as an incendiary weapon. The first spray patents were filed by John Pemberton in 1884 and Paul Curry in 1887. The first commercialization of the product occurred on October 5, 1989 when Japanese businessmen Shosei Takayama and Ikuo Kobayashi patented their design for his spray. Tear gas and pepper spray were used extensively by the South Korean police in crowd control and riot control. The US military has also used this spray and tear gas for crowd and prisoner control and non-lethal weapons to quell prison riots. In the mid-1990s, Dr. John K. Gaunyse, a security expert from the US Department of Energy, developed a method to formulate airborne spray by atomizing the petroleum-based capsicum solution.  In the late 1990s, the FBI opened an investigation into allegations that there were serious safety and health prob...

Brass Knuckles: Their Origins and Types

Image
Brass knuckles are fist weapons designed to be worn around the knuckles. They were not designed for boxing, but for self-defense. One of the earliest known mentions of knuckles is in Martial Arts - The Fighting Art by Sir Richard Burton. It was translated into English by Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton KCMG CB (1821-1890) and first published in London by Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans in 1869. The author describes a type of knuckle-duster worn by a systematized style of Japanese martial arts called Kenjutsu, which was historically used in feudal Japan by the samurai class. The practice was not only for display but for training in martial arts from multiple systems to counter-attack from multiple directions. Among these were swordsmanship, staff fighting and the use of kata - a series of strikes and counters designed to prepare a student to become an expert in self defence. In the 18th century, weaponsmiths began experimenting with designs to reinforce the knuckle of a fist f...

The Correct Way To Hold Brass Knuckles

Image
Correct! Brass knuckles are weapons designed to deliver an incapacitating blow with an unprotected fist. They are typically made of compacted brass or bronze, hence their name. Though knuckles are classified as a weapon, they are widely available in the United States where they are marketed primarily as self-defense devices. These weapons were associated with street gangs in the 1970s and 1980s because it was believed that carrying them made an individual more likely to be attacked. They have also been used by both street criminals and law enforcement officers during riots to deliver incapacitating blows that wouldn't necessarily cause death or permanent injury. Ever Wondered What The Correct Way To Hold Brass Knuckles Is? Look No Further! The first rule, as with anything else in life, is safety first– meaning never sticking your fingers inside either end of your brass knuckles . Then it’s time to grip them firmly but not too tightly (again with safety in mind). It’s impo...

Brass Knuckles Are Available In Many Types And Are Suitable For Self Protection

Image
Brass knuckles are metal-encased knuckles with a hole for the thumb and three spikes extending from the fist. They were commonly carried by criminals to make an intimidating display and intimidate potential victims and their potential witnesses. This intimidation tactic was useful because it was difficult to identify victims through "rough justice" (i.e., unlawful killings) without onlookers stepping forward to identify perpetrators. The knuckles generally had a length of between 3 and 5 inches and were usually made from either copper, brass or steel. Brass was more expensive than metal. It was said that the more expensive the metal used in brass knuckles, the higher the social class of criminal one was. Still, no matter at what price they were made, knuckles were never common until well into the 20th century. Some common ways of using brass knuckles had evolved, such as the cuff. This is where two knuckle dusters are placed on the inside of the knuckle of one's fist. ...
